So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth. So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out.” (Genesis 6:13&14) God continues to give detail after detail on how he needed to build the ark. Then tells him, “… You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you.” (Genesis 6:20) Noah did everything just as God commanded him. (Genesis 6:22)
Can you imagine? This seems totally insane! It says he did everything God told him to do, but sometimes I wonder if there was process he had to work through? Or did he really just trust God that much?!?!
Then the LORD said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets. When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in.”(Joshua 6:2-5)
Okay, like seriously? This just seems too wild to be true.
The Phone rings:
“This is Denise from Church. I saw that you have signed up to do the music for VBS this year.”
“… oh… um… I have a volunteer card filled out with your name on it, your phone number, and filled out that you want to do the music for VBS…”
“I never filled out a card!”
“oh… well, would you be interested in leading our music for VBS?”
“Oh, I can’t… I have an aunt coming from out of town. I wasn’t even planning on taking my kids to VBS this year.”
“I see, well, it’s only a couple hours a day. Would you at least pray about it?”
“Yes I will pray, thank you. Have a good day. Bye”
As soon as I said bye and heard the click of the call ending, God clearly said, “You need to do this.”
With shaking hands I immediately called her back and told her I would and asked her what doing the music meant.
“Well, you will be a running class that the kids will circle through. You will have 2 classes at a time for about 15 minutes each. And you will teach them dance moves for the songs.”
“but… I don’t dance…..”
I was terrified! The girls that I had watched leading children’s dance-praise were teenagers or very young adults. I was old. They were skinny and beautiful. I had lots of jiggles. They moved flawlessly. I was clumsy and awkward. I could not see, even a little bit, how I could possibly do this. However, choosing obedience in this moment, that looked totally impossible, changed my entire life forever. That week of VBS we had 300 children come through my music class. At first, I struggled getting our 5th and 6th grade boys participate, so I made it into a contest. We had two classes come at the same time, so they would have a dance off and whatever class had the most dancers would win. By Friday we had just about everyone dancing, didn’t matter their grade or gender. This won favor of our new children’s pastor and she encouraged me to continue this ministry.
I started with a small group of kids to open up the youth group’s Christmas play. They sang a couple songs while doing simple dance moves. Next came directing the Children’s Easter Musical. Shortly after that, I started a children’s worship dance/praise team.
No, I didn’t build an ark, but the floods were rising in many of those kids’ lives, and they finally had an outlet to learn how to praise and worship God. No, I didn’t march around the city walls to make them fall, but God did call me to walk into the city and give children a safe place to be after school two days a week and dance praises to Him. Do not fear for I am with you He would whisper to me often.
What is God calling you to? What are we pushing away by saying, “I could never do that.”? It is in the thing that makes no sense that He proves that HE can! What do you need to trust Him in today?
Verse of the Week:
If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. 1 John 4:15-18

– Declutter bookshelves, donate books you no longer read/want. Most libraries take used books.
– Share with your group other stories in the Bible when God called someone to do something that didn’t make any sense. How did they trust God or not trust God? What was the outcome of the story?
